It's 3:30am on a typical Monday morning. It's the wee hours and the world outside is still asleep. You're still groggy from the weekend, and the thought of starting another week seems daunting. But as you drag yourself out of bed, you remember the promise you made to yourself – to study for at least 30 minutes every day, no matter what.
You grab your books and sit down at your desk, feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. But as you begin to read, something miraculous happens. The words on the page come alive, and you feel a sense of clarity and purpose that you only experience when you achieve something exceptional. You feel good about your discipline and the new habits.
Soon, the days turn into weeks, and the weeks turn into months. Then you begin to notice a change in yourself. You're more focused, driven, and determined than ever. You're not just studying for the sake of it – you're now studying with a purpose, with a goal in mind.
And then, at the end of the school session, something magical happens. You look at your report card and see that you've gone from a 70% average to a 90%. You win the award of the best student in your school, and your hard work and dedication have paid off in ways you never thought possible.
This was my story a few years ago. This was the discipline that became the progenitor of the current version of Israel Olaniyan that many now know and celebrate. This story taught me the great power of consistency – the ability to take small steps towards a goal, day after day until you achieve something truly remarkable.
This is the power of consistency – For me, it wasn’t about just about studying for 30 minutes every day; it was about the mindset that I developed along the way. A perspective steeped in resilience, determination, and a laser-like focus on my goals for the session.
In this edition of the inspired tablets, we explore the significance of positioning oneself to seize our finest hour and the role consistency plays in capturing life's pivotal moments. We'll delve into the science behind consistency, the habits you can develop to stay on track, and the incredible results that are possible when you commit to taking small steps every day.
The Figurative Shoulder Tap
One of Britain’s greatest Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill once said, “To each, there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered a chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.”
These timeless words are golden and they reveal the enormous truth of the fact that in the tapestry of our lives, there are threads woven with moments that have the power to define us. These pivotal moments as Sir Winston Churchill so eloquently described, are when we are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered a chance to do something extraordinary, something uniquely aligned with our talents. Yet, how tragic it would be if we find ourselves unprepared or unqualified when that moment arrives.
You see, life often presents us with opportunities that have the potential to shape our future in profound ways. Whether it’s starting a new venture, pursuing a passion, or standing up for what we believe in, these moments require us to step forward with discipline, confidence and purpose.
However, it is not enough to simply recognize these moments; we must also be prepared to seize them. As Churchill’s quote suggests, we cannot afford to be caught unprepared or unqualified when our defining moment arrives.
The Power of Consistency
Consistency, as a guiding principle for life, holds the key to embracing our finest hour. It is through consistent effort that we build the skills, knowledge, and resilience needed to seize pivotal moments.
Consistency acts as a catalyst for growth, honing our talents and expanding our capabilities. Whether it’s daily practice, ongoing learning, or persevering through challenges, consistency is the fuel that moves us forward.
By consistently showing up, putting in the work, and staying committed to our goals, we create an environment conducive to capturing life’s pivotal moments. These moments often arise unexpectedly, but our preparedness and consistency make us more receptive to recognizing them when they come knocking. It is through the daily grind, the little steps, the small wins, and the relentless pursuit of improvement that we position ourselves to seize the opportunities that can change the trajectory of our lives.
Consistency is the cornerstone of success. It's the ability to take small, intentional steps towards your goals, day after day until you achieve the results you desire. But why is consistency so powerful, and how can you harness its potential to unlock your own success?
Why Consistency?
First and foremost, consistency is a habit. It's something that we develop over time, and it requires a tremendous amount of effort and dedication. But the rewards for consistency are immeasurable. By taking small steps consistently over time, we create a positive feedback loop that drives us forward and propels us towards our goals.
Additionally, consistency is about doing what we can do. It's about focusing on the things that are within our control and taking action towards them. This means setting realistic, achievable goals, breaking them down into smaller steps, and committing to taking those steps every day. By doing so, we build momentum and create a sense of progress that keeps us motivated and moving forward.
But consistency is not just about taking small steps; it's also about staying committed long after it makes sense to do so. It's about trusting that our efforts will eventually pay off, even when the going gets tough. This is where resilience and determination come into play. By remaining steadfast in our efforts, we develop a mindset of success that can carry us through even the most challenging of circumstances.
The power of consistency lies in its ability to geometrically multiply our drive and compound the force of our hard work over time. Every small step we take builds upon the previous one, creating a domino effect that propels us to heights we may never have otherwise reached. And as you continue to take those small steps, you'll begin to notice that previously impossible things begin to become possible, and the mountains that once seemed insurmountable begin to quake and move out of the way.
A Boys Scout’s Honour
The road up the hill is never a cruise, so facing challenges is a welcomed part of the process. Fear, self-doubt, and external challenges may attempt to derail your progress. However, it is through consistency that you can build the strength and resilience to overcome these hurdles.
By drawing inspiration from individuals who have triumphed over adversity, we see that consistency empowers us to navigate through obstacles, pushing us closer to these defining moments.
Through consistency, we remain always prepared and this preparedness becomes the armour we wear when our defining moments show up. It is through consistent effort that we acquire the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to make the most of these opportunities.
By embracing a growth-oriented approach and staying open to learning from mistakes, we position ourselves to be ready when our finest hour beckons and opportunities come calling. We are thus able to seize the moment with confidence and capacity, fully unlocking the potential it holds for personal and professional growth.
When Preparedness Meets Opportunity
What happens when preparedness meets opportunity? The answer is simple - Greatness is born!
It has been proven time and time again that greatness is often the perfect combination of preparedness and opportunity. This is how ordinary individuals become great. While some may attribute greatness to good luck or good fortune, it is actually the result of consistent preparation meeting with opportunity.
By consistently preparing, we position ourselves in the best way and we are enabled to seize opportunities when they come. When we consistently work towards our goals and remain focused on our vision, we position ourselves to seize the moments that matter most. Whether it's a job opportunity, a chance encounter with someone important, or a breakthrough in our personal growth, being consistent and staying the course can make all the difference.
By staying committed to our vision, even in the face of challenges and setbacks, we position ourselves to seize the opportunities that come our way. Throughout history, there have been countless examples of individuals who have achieved remarkable success by staying consistent in their efforts.
Take, for instance, the story of J.K. Rowling. Before she became one of the most successful authors of all time, Rowling faced numerous rejections from publishers. But she remained consistent in her efforts, continuing to write and refine her novels. Eventually, her perseverance paid off, and she secured a publishing deal that launched her career.
Another example is the story of Michael Jordan. Despite being cut from his high school basketball team, Jordan remained consistent in his efforts, practising every day and working tirelessly to improve his skills. His dedication and hard work paid off, and he went on to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
These stories demonstrate the power of consistency in creating opportunities and seizing pivotal moments.
In Closing
My personal journey taught me the power of consistency. It was the willingness to show up, day after day, and put in the work that ultimately allowed me to achieve my goals even though they seemed impossible at the time.
To give more context to the story. I was barely stable at 70% average and had never been in the top 10 overall best students in the entire school in the previous 4 years I had spent in the school. However, all that changed during one year of consistent studying and diligence.
Who I am today and the many successes and laurels I have won is simply a by-product of that singular year where I embraced consistency and made it a lifestyle.
But this lesson goes beyond just studying. In all areas of life, whether it's pursuing a career, building relationships, or simply trying to be a better person, it's the consistency to keep showing up that ultimately prepares us to take advantage of defining moments and leads to success. As such, it is important to realize very early that we have the responsibility to position ourselves through consistency.
By embracing consistency as a guiding principle, we cultivate the strength, resilience, and readiness necessary to capture life’s pivotal moments. Let us commit to showing up, staying dedicated, and being prepared, for it is through consistency that we can seize our finest hour and make a lasting impression on our lives and the world around us.
Once again, I'm mentally awoken to stay focused and calm through my PROCESS; not to look at the boisterous storms or waves coming at me. I will remain diligent, focused, and resilient.
Thank you for your timely words of wisdom, sir.
God bless you
Thank you Sir for this timely piece. My reminder to keep showing up…
